| Christmas in Other Country | |
I received these slippers for Christmas – my first Christmas in Canada. My family and I had immigrated to this new and foreign country only days before Christmas of 2. On the eve of Christmas day we were still busy unpacking our last luggage and I felt very tired. On the contrary, I had never seen my parents so energetic and happy – they were singing, laughing, and joking with me and my brother as if they had just won a lottery ticket for an unimaginably great amount of money. And, technically, they did – Canada was promising them many exciting opportunities as far as working, traveling, and living in general, but it took my parents some time to take their rightful spot under the sun. I was not particularly excited about moving to other country, because I did not want to loose my school friends and be confronted with the dilemma of finding new friends in Canada. “What do kids like to do in Canada?” I was asking myself in between packing my things in bags. I had learned from the Olympic Games that people in that country really liked hockey and figure-skating, so I was secretly hoping to enter a figure skating club when we moved to Canada. And yet I wanted to receive my new slippers in this new country, my cheap kid’s slippers. |
